$38,000 awarded to young artists with the announcement of the
2008 SAYAB Youth Arts Scholarships
On Thursday 8 November, 2007 The South Australian Youth Arts Board (SAYAB) announced the four winners of its annual scholarship programs, administered by Carclew Youth Arts.
Three of the awards were presented by Miss Chloe Fox MP, Member for Bright on
behalf of the Minister Assisting the Premier in the Arts. They were:
Josh Pearce - Ruth Tuck Visual Arts Scholarship
Michael Yuen - Dame Ruby Litchfield Performing Arts Scholarship
Katherine McPhee - Colin Thiele New Writing Scholarship
Marjorie Fitz-Gerald OAM, patron of Carclew Youth Arts, presented the Independent
Arts Foundation New Writing Scholarship to Alex Vickery-Howe.

Chair of SAYAB, Katrina Sedgwick said, “We hope to encourage aspiring young artists
demonstrating outstanding talent and potential as future leaders in their arts practice.
This funding assists our young arts leaders with unique access to professional
development.”
The recipient of the Ruth Tuck Scholarship, Josh Pearce, will be awarded $12,500.
Josh has exhibited locally and interstate, receiving both critical and commercial
successes through experimentation with different materials and techniques. Josh will
use the scholarship to undertake further study at various schools of art in Europe.
$12,500 was awarded to local musician and composer Michael Yuen, recipient of The
Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship. The scholarship will allow Michael to study at the
Centre for Composition of Music Iannis Xenakis based in Paris.
The Colin Thiele Scholarship recipient Katherine McPhee, an honours degree student,
has completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts where she studied writing, screen theory and
short film production. The $6,500 scholarship will allow Katherine to write a feature
length screen play.
Alex Vickery-Howe, who won the Independent Arts Foundation New Writing Scholarship,
was awarded $6,500. Alex has created original works for theatre, working with several
local and Sydney based theatre companies. Alex plans to use the scholarship to develop
as a writer of character-based interaction by working with Caleb Lewis, a former
scholarship winner in 2004.
John Hill, Minister Assisting the Premier in the Arts, acknowledged the significance of
the scholarship program, “These scholarships highlight the importance of providing
opportunities to assist young South Australians who excel in their chosen art form. The
opportunity for them to further develop and refine their skills is so valuable, particularly
for supporting burgeoning artists in realising their full potential”.
