GUIDELINES
FOR APPLICANTS
RUTH TUCK SCHOLARSHIP
(Visual Arts)
BACKGROUND
Established
by the South Australian Government in 1994, the scholarship is offered
annually to assist young South Australians to further their professional
development and training in the visual arts. The scholarship has been
created to honour Ruth Tucks lifelong commitment to ensure young
peoples participation in the arts.
Applications
are called for once per year in February.
The
total value of the scholarship is $11,250
ELIGIBILITY
-
Applicants
must be 26 years of age or under, at the closing date of applications..

In
general SAYAB gives priority to funding activity that will benefit
young South Australian artists or improve youth arts opportunities
in South Australia. Preferred applicants will therefore:
- be an Australian
citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia;

have resided in South Australia for at least six months immediately
prior to making the application;

remain resident in South Australia for the period for which the funding
is provided. (This requirement will be waived where the grant is for
overseas travel).
Eligible
proposals could include:
A course of
study that falls outside the Austudy award, particularly in the
areas of overseas and second degree study, as well as private tuition
with master teachers.
Working with
a high-profile studio or organisation.
An opportunity
for a young artist to engage in a traineeship or mentor scheme with
an established practitioner or group.
Proposals
that would not be eligible include
Expenditure
for capital items.
Attendance
at events eg. festivals, conferences etc.
Specific
project activities eg. mounting of a production or presentation
of a concert.
To
complete a course of study that has already been commenced at
the time of application.
ASSESSMENT
CRITERIA
If training
is to be provided by an organisation or individual, is there evidence
of support?
Is the organisation
or artist/mentor able to provide the level of skills development
to enable the applicant to realise the objectives of the proposed
program?
Does the proposal
demonstrate that it will develop the skills of the applicant?
Has the applicant
demonstrated:

the capacity to achieve high artistic endeavour?
- commitment to the pursuance of high standards of artistic achievement?
Is the level
of financial support appropriate for the proposal?
The applicant
must provide two references, one from a person who is able to provide
specialist advice as a practitioner.
The applicant
must provide examples of their work to a level that enables the
Advisory Committee to assess their artistic ability.
FURTHER
INFORMATION
- Applications
are initially assessed by the Ruth Tuck Scholarship Advisory Committee.
The recommendations of this committee are then endorsed by the South
Australian Youth Arts Board and then require the final approval of
the Minister for the Arts. Successful applicants will be sent an offer
of scholarship by the Minister for the Arts.
- The successful
candidates will be required to provide a report on completion of the
scholarship on a proforma that will be provided.
- Recipients of
a scholarship will not be eligible for other South Australian Youth
Arts Board grants or subsidies during the period of the scholarship.
- Six (6) copies
of the application must be submitted to the committee.
- One (1) copy
only of support material to be submitted.

The scholarship recipients will be announced in June.
