GUIDELINES FOR APPLICANTS INDEPENDENT ARTS FOUNDATION and COLIN THIELE SCHOLARSHIPS
(Literature)
BACKGROUND .
The Independent Arts Foundation Literature Scholarship has been provided by the Independent Arts Foundation, which was formed in 1994, to provide independent funding to South Australian arts groups and individuals. The Colin Thiele Literature Scholarship has been established by the State Government.
Established in 1996, the scholarships are available for young people and are offered annually to assist young South Australian writers to further their professional development and training. The scholarship may be used by a young writer to enable them to have dedicated time to write or undertake an activity to develop a piece of writing eg. travel, research, training or contribution to an editor.
Applications are called for once per year in March.

Each scholarship is worth $6,000.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must be 26 years of age or under, at the closing date of applications. In general SAYAB gives priority to funding activity that will benefit young South Australian artists or improve youth arts opportunities in South Australia. Applicants must therefore:
    - be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia;
    - have resided in South Australia for at least six months immediately prior to making the application;
    - remain resident in South Australia for the period for which the funding is provided. (This requirement will be waived where the grant is for overseas travel).
  • Applicants will need to have at least a number of poems and/or short stories published in a journal and/or magazine, or plays to a workshop level. If young writers do not have this, but believe they can still demonstrate a strong commitment and ability in their area, they are asked to discuss their proposal with the Executive Officer of the Committee.
  • Applicants for a scholarship are required to submit, as support material, either a copy of their published/performed work or sufficient unpublished/unperformed material to enable the Advisory Committee to assess their writing ability.
  • The applicant must provide two references, one from a person who is able to provide specialist advice as a practitioner.
  • (Note: It would be anticipated that recipients of the Scholarship would reduce their work or study to enable the recipient to use the scholarship to dedicate more time to writing).
  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

  • Does the application demonstrate a professional development and/or training outcome?
  • If a course of study is proposed:
    - does it fall outside the eligibility for the Austudy award?
    - is there evidence of support from the institution?
  • If training is to be provided by an organisation or individual, is there evidence of support?
  • Is the organisation or artist/mentor able to provide the level of skills development to enable the applicant to realise the objectives of the proposed program?
  • Does the proposal demonstrate that it will develop the skills of the applicant?
  • Has the applicant demonstrated:
    - the capacity to achieve high artistic endeavour?
    - commitment to their continuing development?
  • Is the level of financial support appropriate for the proposal?
