In February 1997, SAYAB launched its new program, State of Play. This program replaces the previous Schools Touring Program, The Showcase of Artists and the Shows for Schools Register.

State of Play is concerned with providing assistance for South Australian companies/artists wishing to take product to schools in regional South Australia, by way of a grant to help offset the additional costs of touring. (Companies in receipt of Program Grant funding from SAYAB are ineligible to apply.)

Grants will not be available for metropolitan touring.

For the purpose of this program, the definition of companies has been expanded to include theatre and dance companies, multi-media presenters, performance artists and music ensembles, and can include individual artists.

Quality Assurance Process

Under this process, the criteria against which the work of the companies will be assessed are:

  • standard of presentation;
  • curriculum relevance;
  • suitability of material for age-group targeted;
  • availability of appropriate resources for teachers.

To qualify for a grant under State of Play, the presentation to be toured will need to have been successful in a Quality Assurance Process.

(Note: Information from schools on past presentations via completed Feedback Forms will be taken into account in this process.)

Companies will be required to make application for assessment on a form available from SAYAB and provide one of the following for assessment, as appropriate:

  • a presentation of the work in a school setting;
  • a video or audio tape of a presentation of the work;
  • a synopsis of the work in progress along with a tape of previous work;
  • an outline of workshop activity, along with a tape of previous work.

A panel coordinated by the Schools Officer, Carclew Youth Arts Centre, undertakes the assessment on behalf of SAYAB.

There are two grant rounds per year.

Closing dates: Applications close on March 28, 2002 for activity from July to December 2002 and on September 27, 2002 for activity from January to June 2003.
