Scholarships
Carclew Youth Arts scholarships provide an amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young artists who demonstrate outstanding talent and potential as future leaders in their artform or practice.
Each scholarship has a one-off allocation of funds to be used for professional development as determined entirely by the recipient. Scholarships on offer are:
- Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship for Performing Arts $12,500
- Ruth Tuck Scholarship for Visual Arts $12,500
- Colin Thiele Scholarship for Creative Writing $12,500
and thanks to the generous support of BHP Billiton
- BHP Billiton Scholarship for Film and New Media $12,500
Scholarship applications are called for once a year and close mid-July for professional development opportunities to be taken up in the following year.
Applicants are to be aged 26 years or under at the closing date.

2012 Scholarship Recipients
Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship for Performing Arts – Robert MacFarlane
The Dame Ruby Litchfield scholarship will assist Robert to study extensively in Germany during 2012 to further his qualifications as a Bach specialist. Robert will also continue intensive German language study at the University of Leipzig.
Ruth Tuck Scholarship for Visual Arts – Amy Joy Watson
The Ruth Tuck scholarship will assist Amy to undertake two professional development opportunities in New York during 2012: a mentorship with sculptor Rachel Hayes and a two month artist residency.
Colin Thiele Scholarship for Creative Writing – Phillip Kavanagh
The scholarship will assist Phillip to undertake two playwriting courses offered by Griffin Theatre Company in Sydney in 2012.
Inaugural BHP Billiton Scholarship for Film and New Media – Michael Richards
The scholarship will assist Michael to undertake professional development with established industry practitioners in two technical elements (3D filmmaking and moving camera shots) to further develop existing skills in Stereoscopic 3D filmmaking.

Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship for Performing Arts
Carclew Youth Arts Board’s performing arts scholarship was established by the South Australian Government in 1994, as a tribute Dame Ruby’s lifelong commitment to ensuring young people were actively participating in the arts.
This annual scholarship is offered to assist a young South Australian with unique professional development and/or specialist training in the performing arts. The value of the scholarship is $12,500.
The Dame Ruby Litchfield scholarship supports professional development activity such as:
• A course of specialist study or training that falls outside the Austudy award such as exposure to methods being taught overseas, undergoing second degree performing arts study, or private tuition with master teachers.
• Working with a high-profile performing arts company or organisation.
• An opportunity for a young artist to engage in an apprenticeship or mentorship with an established practitioner (or group) highly regarded for their innovative contributions to performing arts.
The Dame Ruby Litchfield scholarship will not support:
• A course of study that falls within the Austudy award.
• The purchase of equipment or expenditure capital items.
• Attendance at performing arts events like festivals, conferences, arts markets etc.
• Specific project activities like general development of a production or presentation of a concert.
• The costs to complete study that you have already commenced at the time of application.

Ruth Tuck Scholarship for Visual Arts
Carclew Youth Arts Board’s visual arts scholarship is in honour of Ruth Tuck’s enduring belief in the value of young people’s artistic skills and talents.
It was established in 1994 by the South Australian Government to assist a young South Australian to further their professional development, study and practice in the field of visual arts. This scholarship is annual and is to the value of $12,500.
The Ruth Tuck scholarship supports professional development activity such as:
• A course of specialist study or training that falls outside the Austudy award such as exposure to methods being taught overseas, undergoing second degree visual arts study, or private tuition with master teachers.
• Working with a high-profile visual arts organisation or gallery.
• An opportunity for a young artist to engage in an apprenticeship or mentorship with an established practitioner (or group) highly regarded for their innovative contributions to visual arts.
The Ruth Tuck scholarship will not support:
• A course of study that falls within the Austudy award.
• The purchase of equipment or expenditure capital items.
• Attendance at visual arts events like festivals, conferences, openings.
• Specific project activities like general development of an exhibition.
• The costs to complete study that you have already commenced at the time of application.

Colin Thiele Scholarship for Creative Writing
Carclew Youth Arts’ creative writing scholarship was established by the State Government, in tribute to the work of the late SA novelist Colin Thiele who wrote such great works as Blue Fin and Storm Boy.
The Colin Thiele scholarships is available for a young South Australian writer to further their professional development and skills training and is valued at $12,500.
The Colin Thiele Scholarships support professional development activity such as:
• Dedicated time allocated towards the pursuit of writing.
• Undertaking a special activity to develop a piece of writing, such as travel, research, training or contribution to an editor.
• Living allowance whilst undertaking a writing course.
• Purchase of equipment or materials to support their writing.
The Colin Thiele Scholarships will not support:
• A course of study that falls within the Austudy award.
• The purchase of equipment or expenditure capital items.
• Attendance at literature events like Writers Week, conferences, book launches.
• The costs to complete study that you have already commenced at the time of application.

BHP Billiton Scholarship for Film and New Media
Thanks to the generous support of BHP Billiton, every year for the next three years Carclew will now be able to offer a Film and New Media Scholarship – worth $12,500, the scholarship will help a talented young artist break into a notoriously hard field.

Scholarship Recipients – 2011
Dame Ruby Litchfield Performing Arts Scholarship – Jody Fisher
The Dame Ruby Litchfield scholarship assisted Jody to undertake three month’s private tuition with master classical guitarist Eduardo Fernandez in Milan and to undertake a two year Master of Advanced Studies, specialising in ensemble (chamber music) at the Zurich University, Germany.
Ruth Tuck Visual Arts Scholarship – Lara Merrington
The Ruth Tuck scholarship assisted Lara to undertake three professional development opportunities in Argentina and Colombia (gallery placements), based on furthering her knowledge and skills in curatorship and arts management and exploring her intense interest in Hispanic art and culture.
Colin Thiele Creative Writing Scholarship – Stella Robin Tatlow-Lord
The Colin Thiele scholarship assisted Robin to undertake a mentorship program with two award-winning writers for children enabling her to develop as a children’s writer and illustrator.
Scholarship Recipients – 2010
Ruth Tuck Scholarship (Visual Arts) - Heidi Kenyon.
Heidi undertook professional development at the Centre for Alternative Photography. She took classes and tutorials in Bromoil process, Daguerreotype, Salted Paper Printing and Pinhole Photography.
She also undertook intensive workshops in Xerox Transfer at the Lower East Side Printshop and a three-week residency with international emerging and established artists at the Art Omi International Artists Residency.
Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship (Performing Arts) - Matthew Sheens.
Matthew undertook a Master of Music Degree in Jazz Performance Studies, majoring in piano at the New England Conservatory in Boston, USA. The New England Conservatory is America’s oldest conservatorium and the first conservatorium in the world to inaugurate a Jazz program.
Colin Thiele Scholarship (Creative Writing) - Benjamin Mark Chandler.
Benjamin used scholarship to take time off from his work commitments to enable him to focus on developing his skills independently as a writer. He worked on his second book for Random House as well as pursuing other writing projects.
Independent Arts Foundation Scholarship (Creative Writing) - Ben Mylius.
Ben used his scholarship to undertake a number of different activities directed towards the completion of a first draft of his novel, The Momentary. Steve Evans mentored Ben during the period of this scholarship.
Scholarship Recipients – 2009
Ruth Tuck Scholarship (visual arts) - Fleur Elise Noble
Fleur undertook a mentorship with Allan Smith, the director of multi-media exhibition projects by Gibson International Ltd in Wellington New Zealand. Allan Smith specialises in Filmic-Theatre productions and interactive multi-media spaces.
Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship (performing arts) - Jessica Dean
Jessica was offered the opportunity to undertake the new Master of Arts in Opera at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music (UK), which is a course specifically tailored to the most advanced opera students.
Jessica was also privileged to have been studying singing with Lillian Watson, who is regarded as one of the finest sopranos and teachers in London. This scholarship allowed her to cover tuition fees and living expenses during the period of her study in London.
The Colin Thiele Scholarship (creative writing) - Claire Richards
The scholarship enabled Claire to undertake a course of professional development focusing on writing picture books for children and to work with mentor Penny Matthews.
The Independent Arts Foundation Scholarship (creative writing) - Gemma Sneddon
Gemma used her award to undertake six months writing and to use the time to build professional writing practice. She worked on a script entitled Modern Moonlight where she explored the themes of death, choice and consequence in a futuristic society with an entirely different set of values to ours. Sean Riley was mentor to Gemma during the period of this scholarship.
