2012 SA JUMP Mentees - Artistic Statements

Celeste Aldahn - Visual artist mentored by Mikala Dwyer

Under the guidance of Mikala Dwyer, established and highly praised Australian visual artist, I will work toward the completion of a new body of work for exhibition. Sharing conceptual and thematic ties between our work, Mikala will offer insight toward my development, tailored to suit my practice. Initially, I will assist her in the installation of her work, after which I will work toward my own body of work. Her broad experience and skill base will allow unique insight at crucial points in my mentorship, allowing me theoretical and technical advice, imparting personal knowledge regarding my career, and providing feedback about the growth of my work.

Joshua Baldwin - Musician mentored by John Riley

I will visit New York in order to have a series of lessons with leading jazz educator and musician, John Riley, in mid 2012. I also propose to send John Riley audio examples of my jazz drumming in early 2012, and organise online Skype meetings so that he can constructively criticise my playing. Once I return to Australia, I wish to organise a concert during the latter half of 2012 at the Promethean, a local Adelaide jazz venue. I hope to engage leading South Australian musicians Lyndon Gray, Chris Soole and Chris Martin for the concert.

Jesse Budel - Musician mentored by Gabriella Smart

Mentored by Gabriella Smart, I will be supported in the role of assistant artistic director for Soundstream: Adelaide New Music Festival 2012. Having already organised successful chamber concerts, I wish to refine my skills in artistic direction and programming on a larger scale. This will include learning the skills and craft of personnel organisation, media management and onsite production. This nationally renowned festival will also see me working with four international composers, a collection of prestigous performers (Soundstream Collective) and representatives of the State Opera and ABC.

Lorcan Hopper - Dancer mentored by Peter Sheedy

Under the mentorship of Peter Sheedy, Lorcan will have access to classes at Adelaide College of the Arts and, with Peter as mentor, participate in two or three units of the dance degree including, but not confined to, dance technique and research, dance composition, and choreography. His completed work will be videoed.

Daniela (Bella) Jedrzejczak - Muscian mentored by Sharolyn Kimmorley AM

Through intensive mentoring periods in Sydney with pianist and vocal-coach Sharolyn Kimmorley A.M., I will develop my performance and voice production skills, identify appropriate repertoire to strengthen (in the studio) and showcase (in competitions and auditions) my skills, create a DVD of five new arias from the mentorship; prepare two entire opera roles and audition these and concert repertoire (due to my updated knowledge of Australian development programs, competitions and audition opportunities), expand my network of valuable contacts within the professional music industry, and refine my understanding of preparation methods (and the demands) of becoming a professional singer in the Australian and also European music industry.

Ross McHenry - Musician mentored by Paul Grabowsky

In 2012, I will compose a series of works for a jazz ensemble and expanded horn section. Throughout the course of the mentorship, I will draw on my mentor Paul Grabowsky’s immense body of knowledge in composition and arranging to further my own skills in this area. I will be in regular contact with Paul throughout the 10-month mentorship period and will travel to Melbourne where possible, to work with Paul in person and to attend Australian Art Orchestra rehearsals and performances. In October 2012, I will perform and record the works live in Adelaide. The recordings will be released commercially.

Adam Murakami - Visual artist mentored by Marian Drew

I will develop a body of photographic works, and the finalisation of several prints that will subsequently form my first solo (and hopefully touring) exhibition of fine art photography. With a mentorship designed to investigate not only technical aspect of the photographic medium, but the conceptual focus of a series of fine art photography, my aim is to strengthen the content and quality of my work through review, analysis and development, and ready it for a national and international standard of exhibition, as well as investigating various aspects of professional practice.

Lisa Waite - Theatre performer mentored by Andy Packer

I will continue development of my children’s theatre repertoire under the guidance of Slingsby Artistic Director Andy Packer. By observing each others’ work, I will be broadening my knowledge and the presence of my shows in the industry, strengthening my artistic radar, and building confidence in my director’s eye. Andy will view my shows in front of a live audience, and through the incorporation of his feedback and observation of his own creative process, I aspire that my performances will be taken to the next level. 2011 SA JUMP Mentees - Artistic Statements

Amanda Dziedzic - Glass blower, maker and designer mentored by Ruth Allen

Amanda’s JUMP project will bring together two glass artists, at different stages of their careers and in different states. One established and one emerging, one from Melbourne and one from Adelaide. Together they will research, design and prototype new works for an installation directed piece. Each artist has different talents to bring to the project and together are very excited at the opportunities which may arise. It is their aim not only to create new works but a lasting working relationship to create artistic opportunities for the future.

Erin Fowler - Independent choreographer and dancer mentored by Katrina Lazaroff

The first stage of the Erin’s project will be the development of a program of dance work titled TeaHouse, presented collaboratively by Erin and Perth-based dance collective, Unkempt Dance at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in March, 2011. Erin’s debut choreographic work, ‘Keeping Up With the Joneses’ will be performed alongside Unkempt Dance’s latest work ‘Tea for Three’. The TeaHouse program will also tour to Perth later in the year. Erin will then continue to develop her independent choreographic practice during a study tour to Asia in the second half of 2011. She will experience a number of Eastern dance styles and energy practices which will be integrated and developed into a solo work. This will result in a small showing on her return.

Indigo Eli - Performance poet mentored by Margaret Cameron

During the JUMP mentoring program, Indigo will be developing the theatrical and performance aspects of her poetry, specifically working one piece to a showing stage, and developing a concept of the first stages of another piece to be staged in plastic inflatable installation.

Jascha Boyce - Circus and physical theatre performer mentored by Peta Johnston

Jascha’s project as part of the JUMP mentorship program is to create a contemporary hula hoop act combining traditional circus skills with physical theatre, text and dance to be pitched to various festivals in Australia.

Peta Kruger - Contemporary arts jeweller mentored by Karl Fritsch

Peta’s mentorship project will take place in Munich and New Zealand, two major centres for contemporary jewellery, as well as the presentation of a solo exhibition at the JamFactory, Adelaide, in July 2011. The solo exhibition will be nurtured through the experience of working alongside Karl Fritsch at the International Skilled Trades Fair in Munich and this direct exposure to international artists, collectors, galleries and audiences, through the ongoing dialogue with the mentor and follow up meeting in New Zealand.

Shaylee Leach - Visual artist and designer specialising in photography mentored by Deborah Paauwe

Shaylee’s project will see her build a body/series of photographic works that uses images of youth and the female form to explore themes of identity, place, mixed with fantasy, innocence, with lust, experience & sexuality, to an industry standard that would be appropriate for exhibition. She will then showcase her work in a grassroots arts venue.

Tobiah Booth-Remmers - Independent dance practitioner and choreographer mentored by Carol Wellman Kelly

Tobiah’s JUMP project will see him redevelop his work ‘In Absence Of’ with a view to presenting this work locally, regionally and interstate. He will redesign the work with a view to increasing the touring opportunities.
